Denver Cuello grabs swift second round knockout win over Mexican Ganigan Lopez – Boxing News
Denver Cuello, the current WBC Silver minimumweight champion, made a successful defence of his title in the very first title defence bout and technically knocked out Ganigan Lopez, the former WBC Silver minimumweight champion, in the second round of the
12-round bout held on May 19, 2012.
The ring for the showdown was set up at Palenque de la Feria in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico and the above duo headlined the pay-per-view. The event was organised and promoted by the duo of Eddy Reynoso of Canelo Promotions and Fausto Daniel Garcia of Boxeo
de Gala.
The night was co-headlined by the WBC silver featherweight title bout between Robinson Castellanos and Miguel Angel Gonzalez Piedras and the show was televised live on Mexico’s Televisa channel.
Denver, 25, was entering in his career’s 41st bout and boasted 30 wins. He has nailed 20 of his opponents by knockout and is on a continuous nine-bout win streak. Interestingly, the southpaw Filipino has nailed all nine opponents by knockout and was in his
absolute prime.
With such an intimidating resume and an impressive form, Denver had a clear upper edge over his Saturday night opponent Lopez. Ganigan, 30, was entering in his 25th career bout and emerged victorious in 20. He has nailed 14 of his opponents by knockout and
possessed a decent resume.
Despite the fact that Lopez was in front of his home town fans there was no force that would have protected him from the wrath of the Filipino who was rigorously in pursuit of the Kazuto Ioka, the current WBC and WBA World minimumweight champion.
The bout started and from the very first instance, Denver leashed his full fury and might and battered Lopez brutally. After the passage of just seconds, Denver flattened Lopez on the ring floor by his raw powered jabs.
Denver analysed his opponent keenly and after assuring that Lopez is stunned by his powerful attack, Cuello also known as ‘The Excitement’, moved in for the kill. With the start of the second round, Denver leashed the final wave of right and left hooks that
connected Lopez’s body and face and eventually threw him on the ring floor, permanently.
After the emphatic rather swift win, Denver stated, “To my fans and countrymen, thank you for the prayers. I also thank God for this victory and for the chance to bring honor to our country. I am also dedicating this win to my manager Aljoe Jaro. This is
my birthday gift to him!”
While giving open challenge to Kazuto, Cuello remarked, “To Kazuto Ioka, you can run but you can never hide. It was a difficult road for me to get the mandatory status. Let’s make the fight happen even at your home backyard in Japan. I wan’t to face you
right away and get that belt.”
Cuello now has 31 wins in his account and 21 of them via knockout whereas Lopez, also known as ‘El Zurdo’, has collected his fifth career loss.
