Denver Nuggets record win over Minnesota Timberwolves in close game – NBA Recap
The Denver Nuggets hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night and behind 24 points from Ty Lawson and 18 from Danilo Gallinari, including 7 in the final 4:17, they carved out a 113-107 win.
The Timberwolves suffered a blow early on. Kevin Love only played 8 minutes, after he caught an elbow to the side of his head in the 1st quarter and was assisted off the court. He was taken to a nearby hospital where
he was kept overnight for observation. In his absence, Anthony Randolph came off the bench to score 28 points, a team high for the Wolves.
The first quarter started off tight, with 7 ties. However, Denver went on a 14-3 run to lead 35-22 with 1:24 remaining in the period. Denver finished the quarter leading at 37-24.
Minnesota tried to close in on Denver in the 2nd quarter but a 3 pointer by Al Harrington, followed by consecutive layups by Corey Brewer gave Denver a 48-33 lead. Brewer had 8 points for the night.
Denver later extended their lead to 20, after a 3 pointer by Harrington followed by a layup by Arron Afflalo. Denver led by as many as 24 in the 2nd quarter, and finished the half leading 68-47. They outscored the Wolves
31-23 in the 2nd period. The Wolves, in the absence of their star player and scorer Kevin Love, seemed lost on the offense.
The Nuggets were leading 88-70 in the third period when the Wolves finally got something going offensively. They went on a 10-1 run to close the period, all 10 points being scored by Derrick Williams. Denver, on the other hand,
did not score a point in the last 2:37 of the third quarter.
Minnesota opened the final quarter with a 6-1 run to close in on Denver. After trailing by as many as 24, the Wolves were within 4 of the Nuggets. An effort from downtown by Martell Webster brought Minnesota within 3 with 8:03
remaining in the game. Anthony Tolliver of the wolves then tied the game at 97 with less than 5 minutes left in the game when he sank a three pointer.
Gallinari then stepped up for Denver, scoring the next 5 points including a 3 pointer, giving Denver a 102-97 lead. Webster sank a three pointer for Minnesota to tie the game again at 105. However, Denver scored the next 4 consecutive
points and took the lead for good, winning 113-107 in the end.
"I think it was the worst win of the year. I'm highly disappointed in our habits, our mental toughness. I'm happy that we won but I'm not very happy with the way we won” said Denver coach George Karl after the game.
Arron Afflalo added 21 points for Denver, while Gallinari added 18. Kenneth Faried had a double-double for the night, scoring 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Anthony Randolph had 28 points for the Wolves while Derrick Williams
added 27 points and 8 rebounds. However, Minnesota missed their start scorer Kevin Love, especially at the end.
Both teams shot well from the field, an exact 50%. Denver shot better from beyond the arc which proved decisive in the end. The Nuggets managed 31 free throws as compared to 18 by the Wolves, and converted 22 of those. The Wolves
were outscored 42-52 by the Nuggets in points within the paint and 9-20 in fast break points.
The Wolves have now lost 7 of their last 8 games. Denver, on the other hand, won their fourth in a row at home, and 2 in a row to move to 7th position in the Western Conference.
