My son has ADHD and just started to write his name. Every letter that he write is upside down or backwards. His teacher from School says that it common with kids with ADHD to start out writing upside not to worry it should go away. If it doesn't go away by the time he is in 2nd grade then have him tested for dislexia. Now the daycare teacher thinks that he is and it is not the ADHD. I agree with the School teacher I think that the daycare dosen't really knkow much about ADHD. I would like to find a website or some kind infromation that I can give to the ladies at the daycare to help them understand his disabilities. I would greatly appciate any infomation that anyone has on the learning disablities of an ADHD child.

  1. Check out these two:

  2. Since he has an IEP the school is suppose to be helping him with ALL of his problems.

Teacher is brushing off the possibilty of dyslexia, which it probably IS what he has, because schools don't want to help children thru special ed services.

WRITE to school and request an official IEP meeting to address the issue of his writing problems and any other problem he has, and ask in this meeting what are they going to do to 'remediate' this problem.

If you think he has dyslexia, then you do NOT have to wait till 2nd grade to have testing done for this.

Schools do NOT do testing to diagnose dyslexia. You have to get a medical professional to do this.

Schools ONLY do testing to see if a child can qualify for special ed AND  if a child 'already' is in special ed (has IEP plan)  they do testing to see what childs problems are so they will know what to help the child with.

You CAN have the school do testing NOW to see what his problems are that they need to help with. They will NOT test for dyslexia, they will test to see what areas he needs help in.

  3. There are many sites out there that explain ADHD....it's pick & choose.  I would say have the school do an IEP if nothing more than to test him so he can have therapy.

My son was dx'd with ADD when he was 6 and started taking meds for it.  It was like night and day.  There are always going to be people that judge whether or not medicating is right or wrong.  The truth of the matter is you need to do what you feel is best for your son.  You're the one that is raising him...not the people giving advice.

And...on another note...my son (he was recently dx'd with Asperger's Syndrome too) but he did that at first with writing his letters backwards.  That corrected itself but now he won't write a lowercase D or T.

Getting the school behind you is the best way to go.  The daycare people should keep their opinions to themselves if they don't have the medical expertise to back their comments.  If they can't I'd find a new daycare.

  4. Try ERIC.ORG...they have a lot of great info...

  5. im tired of people thinking ADHD is a disability, it really isnt, and dont you DARE start him on meds for it, they turn you into a zombie with no energy, ADHD can be focused and turned into a massive advantage, if you teach him to focus his energy towards something he will be unstoppable, it is NOT A DISABILITY, use it as an advantage
