  2. No.

Pope Benedict XVI, in addition to his native German, fluently speaks Italian, French, English, Spanish and Latin, and has a knowledge of Portuguese. He can read Ancient Greek and biblical Hebrew. http://www.usccb.org/comm/popebenedictxv...

At the end of his speech on Christmas 2006, the pope delivered Christmas greetings in 33 languages. http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories...

    With love in Christ.

  4. I am sorry. The Pope is not a royal. You can post this question under RELIGION.I know the Pope(I am a Catholic) speaks many languages, but as to how many,I can't say.I also know that when he addresses the many of his flock in different languages,he has the help of his multi-lingual staff to translate for him.

  5. The present Pope knows 5 languages. There have been Popes who knew many more. (By knowing a language, I mean  more than being able to say, "Happy Easter!" in it.)

But the record was set by a Cardinal who knew 38 languages perfectly.

Joseph Caspar Mezzofanti (1774-1849) was an Italian Cardinal who spoke more than 38 languages fluently. He never left Italy and yet managed to learn how to speak languages without accent. People from all over the world came to challenge him in their native tongue. They all reported their amazement at this man's fluency.
