Question:

Depending on the approach, do you think boys value their SAHM mothers in the same way boys w/working mothers ?

would? Is it more dependent upon how the boys see their father treat the mother than her actual activities or is it both?!

  1. Before I ask my wife to marry me we discussed this issue. It was my opinion that if we had kids, she would stay at home with them at least until they were teenagers. I did not want my children warehoused at a day care with strangers. Kids need their mother.

They are older now and have come to appreciate the sacrifices made for their well being. All parents should do the same.

Just a side note: I dropped three girlfriends who would not make a commitment to me or our children. I finally found a great wife and mother who shared the same values.

  2. Strange question, Value their mothers? (did you mean respect?)

Working/stay at home or how the father treats the mother is meaningless.  Value is the the quality of the person.  Boys measure quality by how the mother treats them and others, not how she is treated.

(as a man, that's how it was for me growing up)

  3. Perhaps it would depend on the rearing of the children.  I would assume regardless if their mom was a SAHM or a Working Mom, children will respect their both their parents IF they were taught to do so.  =P

  4. I don't think there's any difference. As long as they get treated well by their mothers, why should there be?

For the record, I asked my little brother if he'd like it better if our mom stayed at home, and he said, "No. She deserves to work."

  5. Why would it be different for boys, as opposed to girls?

I see what you're saying, but it's not always the case.  From '91 (when my brother was born) to 98, my mother was a stay-at-home mom, and it was complete h**l.  I watched her argue with my father over finances, I saw her having to ask for money for things like doing her hair, and buying clothes, as if she was one of the children.  As a result, we (my older sister and I) don't really have respect for her.  I'm definitely career-minded (having applied for six jobs in the past hour).

My mom works now, but she's still hoping to find some dude to take all her problems away. It's so sad.

  6. I think both also. It depends on how the mother raises the child and what the child is taught by it's parents.

  7. My dad is the bread winner, and my mother is a SAHM, and I have equal respect for both of my parents.

  8. Well, since I have only ever been a stay at home mother, except when my oldest son was too small to remember, I couldn't say.  The firstborn certainly always seemed to be very fond of me, he still is I think.

The two younger boys are terrors, but both of them seem to be devoted to me, they constantly tell me how much they love me etc.  They are very hard to control sometimes, and my husband is better at doing that, but I doubt that would be any different if I had a job.

I don't know if they would like me better if I was a career woman and I don't really care.  I'm not one and have no intention of being one, and if they don't like it they can lump it.

  9. Men view women in one of two ways: Beneath them or above them.  They rarely view women as equals.  I have found that children in general whether male of female have more respect for a working mother than one that stays home with them.

My husband & I do a split shift. As a result, our boys don't have to go into expensive daycare.  My sister is a stay at home mom - very involved with her children.  My nephews & niece defer to me or their father over there mother because - as my eldest nephew put it "What does Mom know? All she does is stay at home?" Like it or not, this is how they view her.

  10. Both, would be my guess.

I once read a study that found that children of both genders who grew up with professional, working mothers had more respect for women and gender equality as adults.
