Depression and I haven't been able to contact my psychologist?

I'm having some really bad problems with my depression right now (I feel like hurting myself) and I haven't been able to talk to my psychologist- he's usually very good about calling me back after I leave a message, but he hasn't called me back. I don't know what to do. I am not willing to call a suicide hot line. What else can I do?

  1. I have had the same problem with my shrink.

Is there someone that you trust that you can at least tell them how you are feeling? You need to express your thoughts. Even writing a question here is a little bit of a help. Do you have a regular doctor? My primary care physician is a big help when the other isn't available. Don't give up trying!

  2. keep calling him. dont hurt yourself and you maybe should call a suicide hotline if you cant reack your psychologist.

  3. Hang in there

  4. In most cases, when a Mental Health professional is unavailable for a while, there will be a message on his phone telling you who is "covering for him" or when he will be back in town.

He should also have instructions on his phone message instructing what to do in case of an emergency. -- Follow those instructions.

Your current symptoms are serious, and you are in need of immediate attention.   Call his phone number again and leave a very clear, brief message stating you "feel like hurting yourself".

If you choose to not call a suicide hot line, then do call your County Mental/Behavioral Health office.   Tell them you are "in crisis" and are unable to reach your usual psychologist.   Some Mental Health agencies have "walk-in clinics" for urgent needs.

If you are in crisis, you can also call your local hospital emergency room or 911.

These are very personal and embarrassing problems.  Anyone would feel awkward discussing these things with a Dr or Counselor.

If you feel unable to help yourself.......call a friend to make the calls for you, or to drive you and accompany you to your appointment.

    Yes.  It is THAT IMPORTANT.
