Derby prospects will stand shoulder to shoulder in the Lecomte Stakes
The newly turned 3-year-old colts will taste the first real test of their sophomore season when they go out to make a winning start in their first graded stakes race of the new campaign in the form of the Grade 3, 175,000 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds racecourse, a race that will lead up to the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby.
It is believed that some early Kentucky Derby prospects will run in the Lecomte Stakes to see where they stand in the race leading up to the major event for sophomore colts.
It will be a race contested over 1 mile and 70 yards on dirt, and four 3-year-old colts will share the top weight of 122 pounds on the day.
The 3-year-old, Thomas Amoss trained, Shared Property, seems to be the one to beat, the 3-year-old gelding is one of two graded stakes winner in the field of 13 runners.
He is 2 of 3 lifetime starts, and last year in September, he landed the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity at Arlington Park over the poly track, going a distance of 1 mile.
The Kentucky bred son of Scat Daddy, out of mare Yoursmineours by Belong to Me, defeated Take Charge Indy in second and Motor City in third while covering the distance in 1 minute and 37.93 seconds.
“He’s training really well now,” Amoss said last week after the colt worked six furlongs in 1:15.8. “He still has not won going two turns and that’s one of the things we’re anxiously looking for at this time. The Lecomte should be a good starting point for us, but the screws may not be completely tight just yet on this horse. I expect him to run very well, but we’re also thinking about the rest of the year.”
The Oklahoma bred Ted’s Folly is coming in to the Lecomte Stakes with a 5 race winning streak, and he will vie for a sixth one on the trot.
Zayat Stable’s coupled entry of, Don and Sheila and Z Dager, could pose an upset in the lineup of 13, and draw a lot of betting attention, though the two are yet to be stakes winners, but have the potential to outrun anybody on the day.
