Derbyshire lose to Leicestershire despite good batting show: Friends Life T20 – First Innings Recap
Australia’s all-rounder, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, on Saturday, June 18, 2011.
The hosts piled 160 runs in their innings, but their bowlers failed to defend the target, as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Leicestershire-c807 reached 161 runs in 19.1 overs, losing just five wickets.
Derbyshire’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-David-Sutton-c73270, decided to bat first after the coin flipped in favour of his side. He predicted a high-scoring game, as the pitch looked good for batting. His batsmen didn’t disappoint either, scoring a decent total, but they fell 10-15
runs http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Short-c90107 in the end.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Martin-James-Guptill-c74885, who has been opening the innings for his national side as well in the recent past. Durston failed to get going and was sent back to the pavilion after adding just seven runs
to the total. He got out in the second over of the innings.
The home team’s first-drop, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chesney-Hughes-c1233, walked out in the middle and gave solid support to the Kiwi player. Both played cautiously before Hughes was dismissed after scoring 22 runs from 20 balls. He would have liked to carry onto the start to his innings,
but was unable to do so and was stumped in an attempt to play an aggressive stroke.
Guptill had been criticised in the recent past for not being able to convert starts into http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Griffith-c919 innings. This might have been the reason for him to be over cautious in the innings. He top scored the Derbyshire innings with 44 runs from 43 balls, striking six
boundaries. The Kiwi start would have liked to bat until the end, but was dismissed in the 16th over of the innings.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wayne-Lee-Madsen-c96356, who was involved in a 60-run stand with Guptill for the third wicket, was also unable to make most of the start he got to his innings and was dismissed for 28 runs from 26 balls.
Middle-order batsmen, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ross-Andrew-Whiteley-c86874 and Gary Park took advantage of the solid platform laid by their top-order batsmen and played some big shots towards the end of the innings. They finished with unbeaten 21 and 22, guiding their team’s total above 150.
Derbyshire’s start was a touch slow, which cost them some useful runs.
Only four wickets fell in the hosts’ innings, but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harry-Frederick-Gurney-c61806 did a terrific job, restricting the opposition to a relatively lesser total on a good batting wicket. He took one wicket for just 14 runs in three overs.
