Derbyshire signs new terms with skipper Wayne Madsen – Cricket News Update
Derbyshire County Cricket Club on Wednesday handed a new three-year contract to the skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wayne-Madsen-c2784, after he led the club to Championship promotion in 2012. The new terms will now keep him with the club until the end of the 2012 season.
The 28-year-old South Africa-born top-order batsman led Derbyshire to the LV = County Championship Division Two title in the recently concluded 2012 season – his first season as skipper. This was Derbyshire’s first silverware since 1993.
Madsen said that staying at Derby for another three seasons was fantastic and hoped to continue with his impressive form in Division One.
"To lead this squad is a great honour, I'm so excited about where we’re heading and we're looking forward to challenging ourselves in Division One," said Madsen while speaking to media reporters after signing the three-year contract extension.
"What we achieved last year was incredible and this is a club that's growing and moving in the right direction on and off the field," he added further.
The hard-hitting opening batsman made his first class debut with Derbyshire in 2009 and has so far played 56 matches scoring 3,401 runs at an impressive average of 36.21, including 12 centuries. He was the leading run scorer for the club in Division Two campaign this season, with a tally of 885 runs, including a career best of 231 against Northants in August.
His List A record is equally impressive with 1291 runs in 47 one-day outings, and 510 runs in 27 Twenty20 fixtures.
Derbyshire’s head coach Karl Krikken was also full of praise for the Durban-born batsman and his shrewd captaincy.

"He's got a great captaincy style and the example he sets the younger players in terms of his work ethic is fantastic. I'm delighted we're continuing to work together to keep taking the club forward," the head coach concluded.
