At stumps on the first day of the four day match between Derbyshire and Essex in the County Championship Division Two, the hosts trail by 217 runs with seven wickets in hand in their first innings, at County Ground, Derby.
DJ Wainwright’s four-wicket haul helped Derbyshire prevent Essex from amassing a bigger total which at one moment the batting side seemed destined for.
The day began with the hosts choosing to field, giving their bowlers a first go at the visitors. And they made early inroads when AP Palladino grabbed the wicket of Essex opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jonathan-Clare-c1729 Mickleburgh. At the time of this wicket, the batting side had bolstered only five runs on the board.
The second-wickehttp://www.senore.com/Cricket/OA-Shah-c2134 and T Westley took the score to 33, before the opener had his stumps shattered by TD Groenewald after hammering a knock of 14 runs off 46 deliveries.
In times like these, Essex desperately needed a solid batting partnership, however, the duo of Shah and ML Pettini could take the score to only 57, before ML Turner chipped in by incinerating Shah’s stumps with the batsman on 26 runs.
Shah’s departure boosted the fielding side and they nabbed their fourth wicket of the day with Pettini falling on a knock of 14. At this point in time, Essex had posted 74 runs.
With the bowling side running wild, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RN-ten-Doeschate-c2338 and skipper JS Foster forged a daunting partnership, hammering the score to 113.
Wainwright then had ten Doeschate trapped in front of stumps with him batting on 29 off 53.
With the skipper having met his demise after belting a 31-run knock, it were the 42 and 35 runs smashed by GR Napier and DD Masters that really made the difference and enabled Essex to post 245 runs before faltering in 78.5 overs.
Derbyshire’s first innings was least impressive, as they gave away three wickets by the time they had reached 27 runs. Skipper WL Madsen (2), UT Khawaja (0) and AP Palladino (5) all went without scoring in double figures.
The side posted 28 runs before the day was called with PM Borrington standing unbeaten on 14 runs off 49 balls.
