At stumps on the first day of the four-day match between Derbyshire and Hampshire in the County Championship Division Two tournament, Derbyshire trail by 222 runs with seven wickets in hand, at County Ground, Derby.
The hosts chose to field first on winning the toss with the bowlers making an impression by getting a breakthrough with only two runs on the board.
Then with 14 on the tally, the batting side saw the demise of their second wicket when number-three batsman BM Shafayat perished after scoring eight runs.
LA Dawson then became the third wicket of day, finding his way back to the pavilion after scoring only 11 runs.
Skipper JHK Adams was then joined by JM Vince as the two batsmen took the team to 59 runs, before RA Whiteley broke the partnership by dismissing the Hampshire skipper on a knock of 20.
The hosts were then taken aback by the partnership between Vince and SM Ervine, as the two batsmen dominated the bowlers by hitting them out of town without any remorse.
The duo outplayed the opposition and took the score to 195, before Derbyshire finally made a comeback by sending SM Ervine back to the pavilion after he had amassed a total of 61 runs.
With Vince still punishing the fielding side, Hampshire sent in MD Bates as the batting duo clobbered the score to 226, before Vince finally lost his wicket to Whiteley after smashing a brilliant knock of 114 runs.
The side then reached a tally of 272 at the end of their first innings with DJ Balcombe unbeaten on a knock of 20.
From Derbyshire, AP Palladino and DJ Wainwright were the top performers for securing three wickets each.
The home team failed to get off to a flying start, as they lost their first wicket with only 12 runs on the board. Then with a tally of 14, they saw their second batsman walking off the field.
Finally with a tally of 49, they saw their third wicket go down with the side ending the day on a knock of 50 having UT Khawaja unbeaten on 27 and AP Palladino waiting to open his account after facing ten deliveries.
