Dereck Chisora cleared to fight Wladimir Klitschko
WBC heavyweight contender Dereck Chisora has been cleared to fight Wladimir Klitschko after being found guilty of assaulting his girlfriend.
Chisora was present at Isleworth crown court yesterday where he was spared jail after being found guilty of the offence. As a result Chisora was given a 12-week prison sentence that has been suspended for two years, and he was also put under 18 months of probation supervision with 150 hours' community service. As well as that he must also pay £500 costs and £1,500 compensation to his victim and attend a domestic violence rehab course.
At the hearing district Judge Quentin Purdy said: "Your behaviour on May 28th was disgraceful and downright humiliating. You used violence on this young lady and then to heap ignominy on her you turned her over and slapped her on the bottom repeatedly.
"You clearly have a problem with violence and that has got to stop or your career will be over."
Chisora was joined in court by manager Frank Warren who handed the judge a letter vouching for his heavyweight contender.
“Del Boy” has a fight against WBC, IBF and IBO champion Klitschko, a somewhat surprising match-up and a gigantic jump up in class for the Londoner. So far in his career the best opponents Chisora has faced is a washed up version of Danny Williams, aside from that his biggest challenge has been Sam Sexton, not exactly in the Ukrainian’s class.
The chances of an upset are pretty slim, Chisora is similar to all those random Americans that the Klitschkos ship over to jab into submission. It would seem the champions are so desperate for opponents that they scour the globe looking for someone who has scored some decent wins and got a bit of hype behind them. They then drag them off to Germany before they get enough big-fight preparation and they inevitably get jabbed to pieces.
Chisora could be a good fighter. He is big and strong, but stands out from the pack because he moves well, he head work is very good and his hand speed is decent for such a large fighter. However he needs sterner tests before embarking on a world title tilt, some top-rank European fighters or some aging solid pros would have proved a much better build up than Sexton.
Still Chisora doesn’t strike you as a man who does things by halves and has gone steaming headlong into this one. Only time will tell if he has made the right decision.
