Dereck Chisora faces indefinite ban by World Boxing Council – Boxing News
As expected and recommended by BDB, Bund Deutscher Berufsboxer (a German professional boxing federation), Dereck Chisora has received an indefinite ban from WBC (World Boxing Council) for his unacceptable behaviour prior and after his bout with WBC heavyweight
champion Vitali Klitschko.
According to the WBC, whatever Chisora did was “one of the worst behaviours ever by a professional". Displeased with the decision, Chisora’s manager Frank Warren iterated, “I don't understand how someone can be banned without having a hearing. I've never
ever heard of anything like that. There's been no hearing.”
As of now, Chisora has been suspended for an indefinite period and has been demanded to attend anger management treatment. The WBC further said that once Chisora undergoes the treatment, only then he could apply to uplift the ban.
Dereck Chisora had slapped Vitali Klitschko a day before their fight at the pre-fight face-off photography session. The following day, after he was defeated by Vitali, an aggressive Chisora broke out a barehanded brawl with David Haye at the post-fight press
conference. In addition, Chisora spat water on Vitali’s older brother’s face in the ring before the fight had begun.
President Jose Sulaiman said that the WBC is also considering fining Chisora for his misbehaviour. Furthermore, Chisora will no longer be listed in WBC’s rankings. A press statement issued by WBC read, “The WBC is absolutely condemning behaviours that are
not to be accepted in boxing under any circumstances and will act as soon as it can proceed to impose the fines and sanctions as we consider necessary.”
The statement further said that boxers are world known personalities and they are icons for the world, so they should set good examples of honor and fair play and respect each other. Lastly, the statement said that due to Chisora’s actions the overall reputation
of the sport is in jeopardy, therefore, it is important to punish him for his misdeed.
Dereck Chisora had released an immediate apology statement the very next day after his brawl with Haye. However, the WBC and the BDB of Germany did not recognise the apology and went forward to punish the fighter who showed signs of restlessness and aggression
before and after the bout.
