Dereck Chisora vs. Wladimir Klitschko bout in doubt due to legal proceedings
An upcoming court date for British heavyweight prospect Dereck Chisora will put his December 11 bout with heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in doubt.
Chisora is due in court November 10 for a sentencing on theft and assault. The heavyweight pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a May 28 incident. Assault alone carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison with the possibility of a fine.
A source involved in the promoting of the Chisora vs. Klitschko bout said he feels confident that the appearance will not have an impact on the fight.
Chisora, born in Zimbabwe, is 14-0 with 9 KOs. He will be taking on the much more experienced Klitschko, who was all but forced into a fight with Chisora due to the lack of competition and credible challengers in the heavyweight division.
Before his last fight with Samuel Peter, which Klitschko won convincingly, the Ukrainian champion sought out heavyweight prospect Alexander Povetkin and WBA titlist David Haye, but to no avail.
'Del Boy' Chisora was banned for four months and fined in May after biting opponent Paul Butlin in a bout at York Hall.
Though aggressive in the ring, Chisora earned many British fans simply for signing on for a Klitschko fight, something WBA champ Haye by contrast has only considered. Haye is in preparations for a November 13 bout against European champ Audley Harrison.
He is the heavy favourite and many believe Haye-Harrison will be a mismatch.
Haye wished Chisora luck in his bid for the titles, but said that nothing in his 14 fights demonstrates he will win.
A contractual clause stipulates that if Chisora beats Klitschko, he will automatically find himself in a second title bout with older brother Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title.
Big-time British promoter Frank Warren noted that if Chisora beats Klitschko, he will be a national hero.
