Derek Chisora dodges jail time after text message blowout
Move over, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Not even the law can get between a December 11 bout between heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko and Derek “Del Boy” Chisora.
The London-based Commonwealth champion has successfully dodged jail time despite being found guilty for assaulting a former girlfriend in a “humiliating” fashion.
Chisora, 26, was slapped with a prison sentence of twelve weeks from the City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, but it was placed on suspension for a period of two years.
The ruling is good news for all boxing parties interested.
Charges stem from an incident that occurred in May. Speaking about it in a ruling, Distract Judge Quentin Purdy said Chisora’s “behaviour on May 28 was disgraceful and downright humiliating.” He continued: “You used violence on this young lady and then
to heap ignominy on her you turned her over and slapped her on the bottom repeatedly."
A court was told leading up to the verdict that “Del Boy” allegedly attacked his girlfriend at the time after he found text messages on her phone from another man. Prosecutor Darren Watts recounted that Chisora found the messages in her phone while she
was in the bathroom one evening at her home.
Watts said: “One of these messages to her mobile phone was from another man. In response the defendant shouted at the claimant, 'What is this? What is this?' At this point he grabbed her by the arms and threw her to the bed and said, 'You cheated on me'."
The court proceedings even moved Frank Warren, the big time British boxing promoter to whom the fighter is affiliated, to show up in court and vouch for Chisora. Warren presented a letter to the judge highlighting Chisora’s positive personality traits.
Chisora has previously been convicted for assault.
The judge said: "You're a huge man, clearly a very powerful boxer," to Chisora. He added: “You clearly have a problem with violence and that has got to stop or your career will be over."
