Derek Chisora pushes on despite training camp concerns
Inexperienced heavyweight Derek Chisora has expressed ear-perking anxieties about his training camp weeks before a title fight with WBO/IBF/Ring Magazine
king Wladimir Klitschko.
Chisora told Sky Sports News that he was having serious problems getting sparring partners to come to his training camp in Fort William, Scotland, despite being willing to pay them adequate fees for their efforts.
"I haven't been getting enough sparring partners," Chisora said. "I want to pay good money but they won't come up here, they're giving me all talk."
The doubts are the first to arise from team Chisora, who have perhaps finally become cognizant of what they are up against in "Dr. Steelhammer".
Klitschko, rated No.1 heavyweight in the world by Ring Magazine, has not tasted defeat since 2004, when he was knocked out by Lamon Brewster. Since then he has steadily climbed the rankings and sharpened his style to a fine flame with the help
of trainer Emmanuel Steward.
Chisora, on the other hand, earned a fight with Klitschko when WBA heavyweight champion David Haye refused to sit down at the negotiating table.
Chisora, 14-0, has never faced a heavyweight ranked in the top twenty of the world.
The facts recently inspired Jarvis Astaire, a former British boxing promoter, to call for the British Boxing Board of Control to prohibit Chisora from competing. Attempting to make his case, Astaire said, “Not only is Chisora a comparative novice, but he
is four inches shorter than Wladimir.”
Despite sparring concerns, Chisora promised he would gift the boxing world with a stunning performance when the two clash in Germany.
"I'm on my way up, he's on his way down and we're meeting in the middle,” Chisora philosophized. “And guess what happens when two trucks meet in the middle? It's a crash.”
