Derek Fisher has no intentions of retiring after the NBA Finals – NBA Update
When the long time Los Angeles Laker Derek Fisher was traded to Houston Rockets during the mid season trade window there were speculations of him retiring. However the veteran point guard bought out his contract with Rockets and
signed a one year deal with Oklahoma City Thunder.
He is now three wins away from another championship ring – his sixth - and shown no intentions of calling it a day when the NBA Finals end;
“I’ve always tried my best as I approach free agent summers to not really think a lot about it until I’m there, especially at this point when so much is at stake,” Fisher said recently. “I can’t accurately answer that question.
I don’t know where I’ll be emotionally after this series is over. But my plan is for sure to play after this season. I’m not going to retire after this year. I feel great physically and definitely looking forward to playing after these two weeks.”
It may have been a tough choice for Fisher to sign with the Thunder after being a starter with the Lakers for so many years. But a shot at another championship and playing for possibly the best team in the respective conference
may have made it an easier decision for Fisher to accept the $2.3 million offer and the bench role along with it. However as his contract with OKC expires over the summer, it leaves many intriguing options open.
One among them is to rejoin the Lakers. The rules and regulations of CBA however do not allow that to happen. According to the rule, a certain player having been traded cannot return to the same team in the same year, which rules
a plausible return to L.A out for Fisher until March 2013.
With the amount of tension involving Fisher being traded from the Lakers, the point guard himself may not want to return to the franchise.
Nevertheless there still are more intriguing options for Fisher after the season is over with the best possible location being Oklahoma City. This year he brought the much required championship experience to this young Thunder
unit, and no matter the eventual outcome of the Finals against Miami Heat is, no one can deny the impact of the veteran guard.
Other interesting option to consider would be a move to the ‘Big Apple’ to adorn the New York Knicks colours. That move can become more realistic if the Knicks fail to retain Jeremy Lin.
