Derek Fisher looking to end a tough year on a high note – NBA Update
Derek Fisher has had an incredible season, filled with ups and downs. His season journey was saw uncertainty, controversy and revenge, but now he has the chance to forget all of it.
The year started with the NBA lockout. Fisher was the President of the Players Association negotiating with the league about the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. It was a tough few months for Fisher who had to try and balance
both sides and at the same time, face criticism that is natural for a person in his position during a lockout. It almost looked like there would be no basketball this season as after numerous meetings and discussions; both sides were unable to reach an agreement.
However, the CBA was finally signed and the season started in deep December.
Fisher was dealt with another surprise when he was traded from his long time team, Los Angeles Lakers to the Houston Rockets. Fisher had spent 13 of his 16 years in the NBA in the Lakers squad and had won 5 NBA championships alongside
his teammate and friend Kobe Bryant.
Disheartened and disappointed, Fisher decided not to move to Houston and instead went on a hunt for a team that was capable of winning an NBA championship and was desirous of his services. He found the Oklahoma City Thunder and
after playing with them for only a few months, Fisher and the Thunder are 3 wins away from an NBA championship. If he wins, this will be his 6th NBA championship title, adding his to a list of some of the greatest players in NBA history including
Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.
“What it would mean to win a championship means enough by itself without adding what has happened before now,” said Fisher.
Fisher was involved in another controversy a few months ago when the Players Association called for him to resign from his position. Fisher refused to do so and as he and the Thunder prepare for game 3 of the NBA Finals against
the Miami Heat at the American Airlines Arena, Fisher knows the issue is still looming.
Derek got some revenge on his former team when the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in 5 games in the Western Conference Semi Finals.
"This is his eighth NBA Finals in 16 years. As a player you wish you can get there once. A lot of players have never been there, and he has five championships,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks.
Fisher looks for the coveted 6th championship ring and that is all he is thinking about at the moment. He knows there will be questions asked about his future in the post season. He is 37 years old and has already said
that he would like to return to the Thunder next year. However, for now, he is only focused on getting the 3 wins necessary to finish off a dramatic year in style.
