Derek Holland secures win with flimsy ‘stache’, talks about his performance on the mound
Derek Holland moved on to his first starter’s win in the post-season as he displayed his unique moustache and pitched well enough to guide the Texas Rangers to an 8-6 win against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Saturday,
October 1 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
The player was able to pick up a flimsy win, which characterised his flimsy moustache he is sporting in the playoffs. The player was able to avoid a bad beating in the night as he earned three runs off six hits in five innings of pitching. The player moved
to his first starter’s win of the playoffs, gaining an earned run average of 1.84 and a good following for "the worst moustache in baseball".
Holland conceded his first run to B. J. Upton on a bases loaded walk to Rays’ catcher Kelly Shoppach. His other two runs came from a two-run homer from Matt Joyce. The player could have avoided the last two runs if he had not made a throwing error earlier.
The player may have given more runs in the fifth inning but he quickly dissolved the threat with a good throw to cancel Upton’s third base steal attempt.
"Very antsy night, in the first inning everybody could see that," Holland said. "I was making sure I did everything I could not to put too much pressure on myself and give my team a chance to win. I knew I had to make pitches and I did that, although the
bad throw didn't help."
Supporters were out on the stands sporting fake moustaches in support of the hurler. The player still wears his awkward moustache after hearing how it does not suit him.
"I hear it all the time," Holland said. "My friends started doing the moustache thing and I thought, why not? It'll take forever to grow it, and it'll look gross."
The Rangers will not mind the facial hair though. The supporters love it and it got the Rangers a good win. Holland may become the next Brian Wilson of facial hair.
