Derek Holland’s shut-out innings help Texas Rangers humiliate Oakland Athletics 6-0 – MLB Update
Texas Rangers’ starter, Derek Holland had a remarkable day with the ball as he pitched nine innings without giving any run and gave the Rangers a 6-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas on July 7.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead from the very first inning when Josh Hamilton was grounded out to short-stop and Ian Kinsler added one run. In the second inning, Scott Sizemore was grounded out to short-stop and Conor Jackson struck-out swinging without providing
any run to his team.
During the third inning, the Rangers led off with 2-0 by posting one run. Elvis Andrus scored a single run on the drive of Hamilton towards right-field at the bottom of the third inning. Fourth inning also went in favour of the Rangers as they got a 4-0
lead. Mike Napoli singled off centre-field and Mitch Moreland added one run. The second run was taken by Endy Chavez when Hamilton hit a sacrifice fly towards right-field.
Michael Young hit a solo homer (420 feet) to right-centre and lifted the Rangers 5-0 during the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, the Rangers extended their lead 6-0 when Chavez contributed one run on the sacrifice bunt of Hamilton towards left-field.
The pitchers raised their team’s potential in the final three innings of the game. Holland gifted just four hits and had seven strike-outs. He gave up two walks on his 119 pitches. The Rangers’ manager, Ron Washington had a huge ovation for Holland as he
said, “Obviously, he was outstanding. He came out and pounded the strike zone from the very first pitch. He never looked back and stayed focus.”
A lethal accident occurred during the game as one viewer suffered a skull fracture and sprained ankle while catching the foul ball and fell 30-feet down into the right-field. The Athletics’ manager, Bob Melvin commented on that accident and said, “When you
think you've had a bad day, something like that puts things in perspective. It's just devastating. I don't even know what to say. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
In the ninth inning, Jemile Weeks singled to centre-field but Coco Crisp was unable to add a run for the Athletics as he flied out off centre-field. In the end, the Rangers snatched a victory in their one and only game against the Athletics.
