Derek Jeter – A Yankee again
The winter meetings have been gaining momentum and while the second day has come to a close, offers are piling in for numerous players in the free agency. 30 teams from the American League and the National League are looking to
bag in the best players on the roster and though the wish list runs a mile long, every club in the region is competing for the top stars in the market.
The spring training session will come forth in the next, two months. The objective of the meetings is to hasten the process involved with tying players to rosters. The off-season period has brought a lot of changes to the front
but one thing continues to remain the same. Derek Jeter will be in the pinstripe attire for another, confirmed, three years. The most talked about deal in the country looked to raise a lot of eyebrows in the baseball world but things now look like they’ve
been resolved.
The New York Yankees and Jeter had a fall out in their negotiations at the start of the off-season tenure. Both parties were fighting tooth and nail but a compromise was reached, nevertheless. Jeter looked back at the process and
commented on his impression at the time. General Manager, Brian Cashman had suggested to the shortstop to test out the waters in the market before he raised his salary demands.
Jeter commented on the incident, "I was pretty angry about it, but I've let that be known. I was angry about it, because I was the one that said I didn't want to do it. I was the one that said I wasn't going to do it. To hear the
organization tell me to go 'Shop it' when I just told you I wasn't going to - if I'm going to be honest with you, I was pretty angry about it."
However, team President, Randy Levine reached a mutual agreement on a new deal. The gist of the contract explains that Jeter will make $15 million in 2011, $16 million in 2012, $17 million in 2013 and a possible value between the
ranges of $8 to$ 17 million (depending on the player’s performance). A player buyout option for $3 million dollars would also be made available for 2014. The maximum value of the deal amounts up to $65 million.
Levine explained how he reached the agreement. He said, "We spent a lot of time with Derek before this was done. He was the usual high-level, integral person that he is. He comported himself with tremendous professionalism, in
the spirit of what the Captain of the Yankees truly is. I'm just so happy he's going to be here for three or hopefully four years, and I hope he makes every one of those incentives."
