Derek Jeter goes to North Carolina to see Dr. Robert Anderson – MLB Update
If New York Yankees’ Captain Derek Jeter is looking for positive news after suffering a fractured left ankle in Yankees’ painful 4-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers, he might hear it when he meets foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North
Carolina.
Jeter suffered the injury early Saturday morning in Yankees’ American League Championship Series Game 1 against the Detroit Tigers while diving on a ground ball hit by Detroit Tigers’ hitter Jhonny Peralta. He looked in pain immediately after throwing the
ball to the base. The 38-year-old shortstop was helped off the field by the trainer Steve Donohue and Manager Joe Girardi.
The next morning he was photographed leaving the hospital on crutches. It is a hurting blow for the Yankees, who rely on their Captain heavily in batting department of the game.
However, despite Yankees’ spokesperson confirming that Jeter will miss the entire post-season recovering from the injury, the shortstop wanted to be sure and he decided to undergo a series of tests.
“With ankle fractures, there are stable patterns of injury versus unstable,” Dr. Jeremy Smith of Brigham told The News. “It depends on where the break is, if it involves multiple bones and if there are associated ligament injuries.”
“If an ankle injury is classified as unstable which occurs when the normal alignment of the ankle joint is disrupted it usually requires surgery, and the strategy is to put bones back where they belong, and then let the body take over with the healing process,”
Smith said. “Ankle sprains are ligament injuries of varying degrees, and are often but not always treated without surgery.”
Jeter got his MRI and CT scan an hour before the start of ALCS Game 2 on Sunday. It was later revealed that he will not travel to Detroit for Yankees’ Game 3 where they will face the hard throwing Justin Verlander. It is not clear yet if Jeter will undergo
surgery as it mainly depends on the nature of injury.
Anderson has treated some of the biggest names in sports since bursting onto the scene. It will be interesting to see if Jeter can recover from this injury without having to undergo surgery.
