Derek Jeter says New York Yankees are a great team without Alex Rodriguez – MLB News
New York Yankees’ Captain Derek Jeter is not worried about third baseman Alex Rodriguez half of 2013 season because of a hip injury. This is not the first Alex has suffered a hip injury. In 2009, he had to undergo surgery to repair the torn muscle in his
right hip.
In an interview with a leading sports website, Jeter said the Yankees have the capacity to win the season without their star third baseman Alex. Jeter further added the Yankees lost starting pitcher Andy Pettitte and relief pitcher Mariano Rivera to injuries
last season but still went on to win the American League East Division title.
Jeter said, “We still have a long way to go before the season starts. I’ll be ready. If you think about it, every year when the season is over, you take a few weeks off before you start working out. Quite honestly, I’m not behind schedule on anything right
now.”
“I thought it was pretty funny,” Jeter said of his recent photo that led media to speculate that he got out of shape. “The funny thing is, a day or two before then, people were telling me that I looked like I lost a lot of weight.”
Jeter was right in saying that to win, a team is going to need contributions from a lot of players. Yankees have never been a team that relied on one particular person. Perhaps, that is the reason why Jeter believes his team has an outside chance to reach
the World Series finals.
There is no denying the fact Alex is an integral part of the Yankees and the team will miss him until he returns. However, the Yankees will be looking to learn to win without their senior players including Jeter and Rodriguez.
Jeter himself fractured his ankle in 2012 American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers. After undergoing surgery, he has been waiting for his ankle to heal.
According to sources, Jeter’s ankle is healing as expected. It will be interesting to see if he can work on his fitness to ready himself for 2013 Spring Training.
