Derek Jeter suffers fractured ankle in Yankees 4-6 loss against Detroit Tigers – MLB Update

New York Yankees’ Captain Derek Jeter suffered a fractured left ankle in Yankees 4-6 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Saturday, October 13 during Game 1 of American League Championship Series.
Of all the challenges that New York had to overcome this season, perhaps they are forced to face the toughest test. Battling through the post-season without someone as good as Derek Jeter will be a nightmare.
Jeter’s injury in Game 1 of the ALCS added a crushing blow on top of an embarrassing outcome in front of the home crowd.
"The way to honor Derek, more than anything else, is to get the job done in his absence," general manager Brian Cashman said. "That's what everybody in here intends to do, and that's what they'll focus on -- just like when we lost everybody else."
Yankees’ batting line-up struggled to post enough runs on the board in a game that was dominated by the pitchers. Starter Andy Pettitte put up a decent show as he allowed just two runs in six plus solid innings to keep Yankees in the hunt.
Tigers’ slugger Prince Fielder scored first run of the game as he earned an RBI single to centre in the sixth inning. Delmon Young posted one of his best post season performances as he singled to right in the sixth and homered to left in the eighth to give
his side complete control of the situation.
Leading the score 4-0 at the end of the eighth, Tigers just needed to hold on to their four run lead to complete the victory but that did not turn out to be the case. Raul Ibanez smacked a two run home-run against Jose Valverde to force the game into the
extra inning.
"It's a very difficult moment for all of us," said Raul Ibanez. "It's obvious what he means to our team."
"The only thing that matters is that we win games," Ibanez said of Jeter’s injury. "That's the only thing that matters. It doesn't matter how we win them."
However, it was Detroit who prevailed in a thriller. Young drove in the tie breaking single in the 12th to close out a memorable win. The Tigers will definitely be happy as they managed to take one at Yankee Stadium and build up some momentum.
