Derek Joslin strikes two-year, $1.4 million deal with Carolina Hurricanes –NHL offseason Update
Not having played a full season in the National Hockey League (NHL) yet, Derek Joslin, a 24-year-old defenseman hopes of making that happen with Carolina Hurricanes as he signed to a two-year, $1.4 million contract with them on Friday.
Carolina Hurricanes' general manager, Jim Rutherford, was pleased to make the announcement.
"Derek is a young defenseman who played well after joining the Hurricanes last year", Carolina' GM Jim Rutherford said. "He has now put himself in a position to be a full-time NHL player".
Joslin might not be the most well-known defender in the league, but the young player can sure get the job done when given the opportunity.
He began playing for the Vaughan Kings AAA in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) and participated in 60 games during the 2002-2003 season while recording a total score of 27 points (9 goals, 18 assists).
Joslin played for the famous Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in three consecutive seasons until being shifted to Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League (AHL) after he was drafted by San Jose Sharks as the 149th overall pick
in round-five of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Following the draft selection, Joslin participated with San Jose in three regular seasons, but has yet to perform in a postseason matchup. It was during the 2008-2009 season that Derek Joslin played his first 12 NHL games, but failed to register a single
point and ended with a plus-minus rating of -3.
The following 2009-2010 season allowed him to play in double the amount of games, 24, along with picking up three assists.
Before being traded to Carolina Hurricanes last season, Joslin appeared in 17 games with Sharks and registered four points (1 goal, 3 assists).
In another 17 regular season games with Carolina the same season, Derek registered a career high of five points (1 goal, 4 assists) and a plus-minus rating of 7.
With the signing of Derek Joslin taken care of, the Carolina major league club now only has a single player remaining on their list of restricted free agents, namely the team’s alternate captain, Brandon Sutter.
A problem for Sutter could be his inability to qualify for filing arbitration, but according to Carolina team management, a deal will be soon worked out for him.
