Derek Lowe’s pitching helps Atlanta Braves overpower Seattle Mariners, 5-3: MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ starter, Derek Lowe, had a notable day with the ball as he pitched six innings with an ERA of 4.16 and struck-out five batters in the Braves’ 5-3 win against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field, Seattle, on June 29.
The Braves swept the Mariners by 3-0 in a three-game series at Seattle.
During the first three innings, the pitchers were on top due to their extraordinary pitches. Brendan Ryan was lined out to short-stop and Adam Kennedy grounded out to short-stop at the bottom of the first inning.
In the third inning, the Braves’ batters also failed to score runs as Alex Gonzalez was struck-out swinging, Nate McLouth flied out to left-field and Jordan Schafer also got out swinging. The Braves’ first baseman, Freddie Freeman, scored one run in the
fourth inning to give his team a 1-0 lead, when Brooks Conrad singled to centre-field. Dan Uggla moved to third base.
The Braves’ batters exploded three runs at the top of the fifth inning. McLouth scored on the wild pitch of Felix Hernandez while Schafer and Jason Heyward posted the last two runs of the fifth, when Freeman hit a single-run shot towards centre-field. On
the other side, the Mariners added their initial run at the bottom of the fifth to reduce their lead 4-1.
Freeman said, “You never thought you would sweep a series against those guys. We battled against those pitchers and came out on top.”
Franklin Gutierrez scored the first run for the Braves, when Josh Bard singled to right-field. In the sixth inning, the pitchers maintained their line and did not give away any run. Lowe permitted just one run on four hits with one earned run and allowed
three walks on 98 pitches.
In the seventh inning, the Mariners extended their lead 5-1 when Gonzalez scored one run on the single-run shot of Brian McCann to right-field. During the eighth inning, the Mariners were able to score two runs to cut their deficit 5-3. Ryan added a single
run while Dustin Ackley hit a solo homer (371 feet) towards right field.
In the ninth inning, Gutierrez was struck-out and Mike Carp flied out to right-field, without giving the Mariners a winning hope.
