Dermot K. Weld: The legend of the Galway Races
In the history of the Irish horseracing, Dermot K. Weld is the most prestigious and successful trainer whose pupils are always destined to win every event they participate in. Most of the legendary trainer’s horses run with favourite tags every time as the
punters are always sure of their success.
Though Weld is a significant part of every high-profile Irish event but Galway Races are especially associated with him as his trainees seal most of the seven-day festival’s titles every year.
Only during the first five days of the Galway Races 2012, Weld accomplished nine ace titles. What a marvellous record this is!
On the opening day of the luxurious event on July 30, Train Of Thought earned the rock star trainer the title of the Radissonhotelgalway.com & Galwaybayhotel.com Novice Hurdle. During the same day, Midnight Music won Carlton Hotel Galway City (Q.R.) Handicap.
Thunder Mountain was Weld’s third pupil to win on July 30.
On the second day of the gala festival, Voleuse De Coeurs bagged the title of the Topaz Handicap.
On August 1, two of Weld’s trainees thrived. The one was Diplomat who won Tote Trifecta Rollover Handicap while the other was Tandem who finished first in Tote Return All Profits To Irish Racing Maiden.
On August 3 again, Weld achieved two glorious victories. Pale Mimosa brought home the title of the Guinness European Breeders Fund Maiden while Muaanid debuted with a sterling victory in Guinness 17:59 European Breeders Fund Median Auction Maiden.
This was indeed an outstanding success streak which strengthened Weld’s prestige further. Born on July 29, 1948, he started his professional career as a jockey. After successfully riding a number of champion horses for some years, he inclined towards training.
Soon, Weld gained fame in this field as his pupils started winning regularly. Then came the time when he was undisputedly regarded as the best trainer of Ireland.
Currently, Weld is operating Rosewell House stable in Curragh. He has more than 3000 victories to his credit.
Along with Galway Races, the veteran trainer has won almost all the major racing events of Ireland, Great Britain and France and USA.
Despite being old enough, Weld is still active and fresh. He is determined to administer his expertise on as many horses as he can. Live long the legend.
