Dermot McElroy starts with one under par
One of the biggest events on the European Tour, the Irish Open 2012, fired off. Fans from all over the world are pouring in at the Royal Portrush golf course to watch stars of the golfing world, battle it out.
The fans are in real support of their national players. The Open is taking place in Northern Ireland after 60 years, so the event has tremendous amount of importance.
The Irish players are getting a special sort of treatment from the spectators. One of the national players is Dermot McElroy.
In an interview before the tournament began, McElroy said, “It’s fantastic – I can’t wait”.
“I’ve played there many times – it’s one of my favourite courses. Portrush is all about your tee shot – there’s really thick rough if you go off course so you have to keep it on the fairway,” he continued.
The Irishman had a good start on day 1 of the Irish Open. On the front nine, he scored two birdies, first on the third hole and the second on the sixth hole. His two birdies were evened out when he carded two bogeys on the fourth and seventh hole.
The highlight of McElroy’s game was the eagle that he bagged on the ninth hole, at that stage he climbed up to the fifth position on the leaderboard. As a result, he ended his front nine with two-under par.
The back nine was not as good for the-19-year-old. He started off with two consecutive birdies and then carded two more bogeys on the 13th and the 16th hole.
The Irish teenager had a disastrous finish as he finished the course with a double bogey on the eighteenth.
The double bogey came right after a birdie, so McElroy was able to end the day at one-under par. His score on the back nine was +1. The Irishman was able to complete the 7143 yards course in 71 shots.
McElroy considered himself to be experienced on this course. His performance not being up to the mark would have been disheartening for him.
He still has a chance to prove himself, as three days are still left for the tournament.
