Dermot Weld says Voleuse De Coeurs not ready for Gold Cup – Horseracing news
Trainer Dermot Weld has revealed that Voleuse De Coeurs will not be a part of this year’s Gold Cup, scheduled to take place at Ascot in June.
According to Weld, the young filly is not in a position to handle the pressure of such an event, so it is better for her to practice hard and improve the overall fitness in order to take part in major races next season.
The veteran trainer added, “I see her as progressive and please God she will be a Gold Cup horse next year, but this year could be too soon for her. The Curragh Cup and Irish Leger is what we'll look at.”
The four-year-old filly has been performing well for her team in the 2013 season and it will be important for her to continue delivering some consistent results throughout the year. Overall, she has succeeded in four races out of 10, which clearly shows
that she is capable of fighting at the front.
Other than her victories, Voleuse De Coeurs has taken the runner up position on a couple of times whereas secured the third spot once in her career.
Weld went onto reveal that he will be going into the Gold Cup with Rite Of Passage, who is one of the most consistent performers of the modern era. He has got a phenomenal strike rate and knows how to handle pressure at the highest level.
The nine-year-old gelding has not taken part in any race this season, but that does not make a difference at all. He has been representing his team in selective events over the past couple of years and his performances in them have been terrific.
However, the veteran stallion will have to weather the storm from Andreas Wohler’s challenger Altano, who finished first in a recently held race in Germany. He was not rated as the favourite to succeed back then, but took his rivals by surprise.
According to Wohler, “I was very satisfied with that (victory) and Altano will now be aimed at the Gold Cup.”
It will be interesting to see the competition between Altano and Rite Of Passage, but the latter of the two runners has got a clear edge at the moment.
