Deron Williams, MarShon Brooks carry New Jersey Nets over Charlotte Bobcats: NBA Recap
New Jersey Nets haven’t had the kind of start they would have wanted this NBA season and one major reason for that has been the indifferent form of their ace point guard Deron Williams.
After scoring just 14 points and 6 assists in the last outing against the rampant Oklahoma City Thunder, the Nets swingman pounded 19 points, made 10 assists and narrowly missed out on a triple-double with 9 rebounds as New Jersey pulled off a 97-87 win over the embattled Charlotte Bobcats, who have now lost five in a row on the road.
"It was close. I've been close a number of times," Williams said after missing his first triple-double of the season by a whisker. "It will happen someday."
The Bobcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the start but the Nets rebounded with a 19-4 to turn the table on the Cats. They continued to pound Charlotte and by the end of the first quarter, were leading by 28-21.
The Nets kept the foot on the gas and with 2:15 to go in the first half, an Anthony Morrow three made the scores 52-40. After Kwame Brown made a dunk on the resulting Charlotte possession, the Nets responded with a 7-0 run to cap the half at 58-42.
De Marshon Brooks, the rookie shooting guard, who finished with a game high 20 points and 6 rebounds, started the third quarter with consecutive two’s for the Nets, who held onto a 75-61 lead after three.
The Bobcats closed in within ten at the start of the fourth but a quick 11-2 burst by the Nets knocked the steam of their challenge.
Morrow also finished the game with 19 points while the Bobcats were led by Kemba Walker’s 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Bobcats forward DJ White missed the game with a left knee contusion and his absence put the scoring burden on young Walker.
Charlotte coach Paul Silas was pleased with the way, Kemba handled the pressure;
"I hope Kemba can continue to play well," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We saw tonight he really pushed it and was into the game. If we had some of our injured guys here with him tonight, I think we would have a legitimate shot of winning the game."
Gerald Henderson ended the night with 15 points while rookie Bismack Biyombo and Derrick Brown had 11 each.
