Deron Williams, Rajon Rondo – Point Guards who have ruled NBA in the last decade – Part 4
4. Rajon Rondo
The fourth spot on this list is earned by Rajon Rondo, undoubtedly one of the most exciting players to watch. He gets a rank higher than Nash due to his contributions in defence. Rondo has also been lucky with regards to the fact
that he had better players present around him. This has ultimately helped him perform up to his potential.
The wonderful thing about Rondo is his vibrant energy, something which is very much needed in an aging Boston Celtics squad. In terms of his game play, he can do almost anything and everything on the court.
Rondo can penetrate the arc with his defence splitting runs; he can break with the ball like a lightning bolt; and he can rebound and steal in an efficient manner.
However, the one aspect where Rondo needs massive improvement is his jump shot. If he can add that to his arsenal, he might very well become the best point guard in the league today.
Rajon has been around for 5 years, during which he has averaged 10.7 points, 7.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds; per game. He has always shown excellent commitment and despite his small stature of 6 ft 1 inch, he has never shown signs
of fear whilst marking players twice his size or skill.
The Celtics point guard also won an NBA championship back in 2008. Moreover, he was named in the NBA All star team of 2010 as well as 2011. Rondo has also earned a spot in the NBA All Defensive 1st team for the past
two years.
Rondo’s overall personality and achievements have him extremely popular in Boston and he is integral to the Celtics’ title hopes in the coming years.
3. Deron Williams
It has been widely argued that D-Will is the best point guard in the league. However, he is unanimously considered as one of the very best, if not the best. A player like Williams is a true asset for any team and the New Jersey
Nets realized that when they got him from the Utah Jazz. He is at number 3 in this list.
Deron is currently in Turkey, hoping to play for Besiktas in lieu of the lockout. In the NBA he has consistently improved on his past record and just last season, managed to gather an average of 20.1 points, 10.3 assists and 4.0
rebounds; per game. Now those statistics are nothing short of perfect for a point guard.
D-Will can score at will and can also pass the ball around with utmost grace. He was named in the All Rookie 1st team in 2006 and has subsequently been named in the All NBA second team in 2008 and 2010.
A player of Deron’s calibre can only truly shine if he joins a team capable of competing for the championship. He has already been linked to the Lakers and has not displayed any loyalty to the Nets.
So unless and until Williams leaves for a championship club and proves his mettle, we will not be able to truly ascertain whether he is the best point guard in the league or not.
