Deron Williams decision to have ripple effects on the free agency – NBA News
The drama involving the free agency of all star point guard Deron Williams nears conclusion as he is scheduled to meet first with the Dallas Mavericks and then the Brooklyn Nets tonight. Both teams will try to convince him that
their team is the best fit for him, with a hope of winning multiple championships in a roster built around him.
The Mavericks have Dirk Nowitzki and the Nets have a list of hopefuls that can be signed if Williams gives his approval for a return to Brooklyn.
Williams’ decision will have a great deal of effect on the free agency as a whole. His decision will help others make theirs, as the window for free agency shortens.
Two players who have their future being directly affected by the decision Williams makes is Dallas guards Jason Terry and Delonte West. Both are reserve point guards for the Mavericks and both will most probably be without a home
if Williams is signed by the Mavericks because the team will simply not have enough money to keep all three.
Jason Terry has been with the Mavericks for 8 years and has seen much success during that time, including an NBA championship. He would be a great addition to the Mavericks roster as a reserve even with Deron Williams locked in,
but it depends whether the Mavericks will have the finances to keep him.
In free agency, Terry will be in the same league as Ray Allen and both players could get offers from teams who are lacking solid shooters like the Miami Heat.
Delonte West recently took it upon himself to sell the Dallas Mavericks to Deron Williams on twitter, but he might be without a home if Williams eventually decides to move to Dallas.
“That’s all right. If you don’t have loyalty, you have nothing. Right now, I’m a Dallas Maverick and if I can do anything to help out and make this team better, that’s what I’ll do. If that’s my ticket out the door, hey, that’s
something that comes along down the road. But right now, I'm trying to do everything I can to make my team better and get back to a championship,” said West on Saturday.
West was arrested in 2009 and since then has not had a full time contract. He has played the last two seasons on 1 year minimum contracts. This time, he is looking for a long term contract that matches his skill and talent.
"I would like to see a team offer me something based off my skill set, not off of something that happened three, four years ago. That’s what I’m hoping for, a team that looks at the skill, what I bring to a team. Pay me based on
that rather than when I was making stupid decisions,” added West.
West missed considerable games in the last two seasons due to injury troubles and is looking to get healthy in the offseason and be ready for next season. He is still young and looking to make an impact in the NBA.
