Deron Williams’ inclination towards Brooklyn Nets, a worrying sign for Dallas Mavericks – NBA Feature
After the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Championship by defeating Miami Heat back in 2011, a start to some dominant years was expected, an era which was to be defined by the brilliance of Dirk Nowitzki. Mavericks were expected to come back even stronger this season, but it wasn`t the case at all.
In order to clear up cap space with the luxury tax provisions soon coming into effect, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban decided to let go of several players and went into the short spanned season with a much depleted line up. The downsizing included the exit of players like Tyson Chandler, who went on to become the Defensive Player of the Year, this season.
The main purpose to clear up a lot of cap space was to bring in Deron Williams in this year`s free agency to play alongside Nowitzki and return Dallas back into contention, but according to recent reports, the plan seems to have fallen part.
Even though the player himself has hinted that the final two teams he is going to consider joining as a free agent this summer are the Mavericks and the Nets, but keeping in mind Williams desire to be part of a playoff contending team, he was expected to make a move to Dallas.
However, there is a financial aspect to the whole scenario as well. The Nets can offer Williams with a 5 year contract which will automatically see his income become $26 million more then what the Mavericks have to offer him. They are also willing to spend openly on any free agent or tradable asset Williams puts his hand on and the recent gesture of putting in a 8' x 16' mobile billboard infront of his house on his birthday gives the measure of their desire to retain the All-Star one guard.
According to recent reports, Williams invited Avery Johnson, the Nets coach to his private birthday party and the association between the two is clearly an indicator of Williams’ preferences.
This has become a cause for huge concern for Cuban and Mavericks who had been hoping to bring Williams back to his hometown Dallas and get back to being one of the best teams in the league, instantly.
The only hope remaining for Dallas at the moment is to hope that Williams considers the desire to win the championship more dear. If that is not the case, Mark Cuban’s rebuilding plans will be in tatters.
