Deron Williams leads New Jersey Nets past Washington Wizards – NBA Recap
The New Jersey Nets blew away the Washington Wizards to win 110-98 here at the Prudential Center on Friday night. Deron Williams led the Nets scoring with 19 points and dishing 13 assists in the process. The Nets had a good night offensively, with 5 players scoring double digit points. John Wall led the Wizards scoring with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Wizards missed their first seven field goal attempts to open the 1st quarter and the Nets took a 5-0 lead early. The Nets never lost this lead throughout the quarter and late in the period, went on an 13-3 run to extend their lead to 29-14. The first quarter finished with the Nets leading 33-20.
The 2nd quarter was much the same, with the offense belonging to New Jersey, they kept a comfortable lead throughout the quarter and finished the half leading 57-43. The Wizards scored 23 points in the 2nd, only 1 less than the Nets. However, their poor performance in the 1st ensured that the Nets held on to a comfortable 14 point lead going into the 2nd half.
The nets seemed to be scoring at will, with Washington having no answer for them defensively. They led 68-50 with 07:16 remaining in the quarter, and then again 81-63 with 1:00 remaining. The quarter closed with the Nets leading 83-66.
The nets led 104-80 with 4:26 left in the game and finished the game winning 110-98. Washington were playing without Nene and Trevor Booker and in their absence, had no interior presence which allowed the Nets to score almost at will. The Nets shot 56.2% from the field and 38.9% from the three point line. They had 32 assists for the game, compared to 22 for the Wizards.
“They came out pretty slow offensively and we couldn't make anything early" said coach Randy Wittman
Deron Williams had a good night for the Nets, scoring 19 points. But there were 5 Nets players in double figures. Gerald Wallace had 19 points; MarShon Brooks had 18 points and 6 assists. Jordan Williams and Anthony Morrow came off the bench to score a combined 31 points, shooting 15 of 18 from the field.
John Wall led the scoring for the Wizards with 18 points. Kevin Seraphin added 15 points and 9 rebounds while Roger Mason Jr came off the bench to add 15 points to the Wizards tally.
The Wizards started with two rookies, Jan Vesely and Chris Singleton, who did not do much offensively. The Washington Wizards were officially eliminated from playoff contention after this loss, the second team behind Charlotte to be eliminated up till now from the Eastern Conference. They have the 2nd worst record in the east now.
