Deron Williams leads the New Jersey Nets over Detroit Pistons 99–96 - NBA Recap
Two sides at the wrong end of the standings this season faced off at the Prudential Center, Newark and after an engaging contest, the New Jersey Nets emerged victorious, sneaking past the Detroit Pistons 99 – 96 with a late surge.
The Pistons plight continued as they lost the 7th consecutive game and with only 4 wins this season they currently stand second last in the Eastern Conference. 5 players from Detroit crossed the double figures but even
that couldn’t help to win the match.
Tayshaun Prince and Greg Monroe scored 21 points each, followed by Brandon Knight’s 15 and Jonas Jerebko's 14 points. Walker Russell also added 12 points on the night.
Deron Williams was the main attraction of the evening with 26 points. Deron displayed great skills and some jaw dropping moves, including a fade away jumper in the midst of defenders that left the crowd aching for more. It was
also William’s 5th game in a row where he scored more than 20 points.
Kris Humphries scored 18 points while Jordan Farmar and Shawne Williams contributed with 15 and 11 points respectively.
The Nets took full advantage of the Pistons weak defence as they the shot 48 percent from the field and succeeded in scoring 35 percent 3 pointers.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank realized the weakness and commented that:
"We have to install defensive intensity. (It is the) only way we have a chance of winning, (We) want to establish a defence-first mentality.)"
Content with his team’s performance New Jersey coach Avery Johnson said,
"Jordan Farmar had some big 3s and Shawne Williams gave us a big boost in the first half with his 3-point shooting,"
The game set off at a slow pace and both teams remained fairly even. By the end of 1st quarter, the score was tied at 23.
However by the mid of 2nd quarter, things started to warm up for Nets as the duo of Williams and Humphries baffled the opponents with a host of 3 pointers and layups. The assault created a substantive lead and the score
stood at Nets 49 and Pistons 38 by the end of second.
The Pistons tried to narrow the gap after the break and clawed down the deficit to just one point, 72-71, going into the final frame. Both teams played their hearts out and no one could take a lead, until it came down to the last
moments as the score stood at New Jersey 98 and Detroit 96.
Prince’s foul then awarded Nets with two free throws, one of whom he converted and that sealed the deal.
