Deron Williams neutralizes Linsanity as New Jersey Nets outscore New York Knicks, 100-92-NBA Recap
Deron Williams proved to be an antidote for Linsanity on Monday night.
The All-Star point guard was on song as he scored a game high 38 points assisting New Jersey Nets to outscore New York Knicks,100-92 at the Madison Square Garden.
Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni lavished Williams with praise.
"Deron Williams is really good. You have to give him credit because he is one of the best players in the league."
Even though the Nets had a poor shooting rate as compared to the Knicks as they shot 39.0% from the floor while New York had 40 percent. They connected on 72.4 percent from the charity stripe while the hosts were slightly better
with 73.1% from the free throw line.
Excluding Williams, 3 other players climbed up the double figure index. Rookie Marshon Brooks had 18; Kris Humphries had a double-double with 14 points and 14 boards while Deshawn Stevenson poured in 11 points.
For the Knicks Jeremy Lin netted 21 and dished out 9 assists; Amare Stoudemire recorded 17 while Tyson Chandler had 14 points and 8 boards. Forward Carmelo Anthony in his return game after a two week layoff scored only 11 points
and also had 6 assists.
Albeit 5 players with substantive score and return of Carmelo Anthony after missing last 7 games the Knicks couldn’t avert a defeat. They opened the game with a 13-3 run but that was reciprocated by a flurry of free throws and
a 3-pointer from Stevenson, reducing the gap to 13-10. Both the teams added 8 more points in the passage that followed as the Knicks went into the second quarter with a 21-18 lead.
The Knicks shot 11 for 23 in the 1st stanza but the Nets held them down to 7 for 23 in the 2nd quarter. They pulled off a 9-3 run in the opening moments of 2nd quarter, eating away the lead and
placing themselves ahead of the hosts at 27-24.
A 3-pointer from Baron Davis tied the score at 27 apiece but the Nets raced away with another 15-6 run to augment their lead at 42-33, 04:26 still in hand for the half. New York scored 4 more points before New Jersey capped off
the segment with an 8-5 run as the game entered into the halftime at 50-42.
After some back and forth action early in the third, the Knicks closed in at 54-60 going into the last four and a half minutes of the period. They were faced with a swift response though as the Nets capped the quarter with a 22-10 run to take a 82-64 lead
into the fourth.
The Knicks pulled off an early 13-3 run in final quarter scratching down the deficit to 8 points 85-77, but the Nets replied that with a 9-4 run with 03:13 to go and reclaimed their double digit lead 94-81.
Both of the teams added one more point to their toll by hitting a freebie each and afterwards with a 3-pointer from Morrow New Jersey took a 14 points advantage with 98-84 and only 01:31 to go.
The Knicks still had fight left in them and pulled off a last minute 8-0 run that reduced the gap to 98-92, but after a pair of free throws from Morrow, the Nets sealed the matter.
