Deron Williams says he is recovering from injury; looking forward to playing in Turkey – NBA News
Deron Williams revealed in a recent interview that he was still not a 100 percent fit but on his way to recovery. He also expressed his enthusiasm at being able to soon go abroad and play professional basketball in Turkey.
Deron Williams is a household name in the NBA. The player came to the spotlight whilst with the Utah Jazz and established himself as one of the premier point guards in the NBA. It was there that he received a wrist injury he has
carried since.
Now with the New Jersey Nets after a block buster trade in midseason, Williams is hoping to recover in time from the surgery that took place in April to remove three bone fragments and scar tissue from his right wrist. He commented
on the matter in the interview.
"I wouldn't say 100 percent," Williams told the newspaper. "I've still got some strengthening and breaking up scar tissue. That's the process with any surgery."
Another topic Williams addressed was that about his move to Turkey. With Williams being the most high profile player so far in the summer to have agreed a deal with an overseas team, interest in his impending departure is sky high.
Fans and journalists alike bombard him with the same questions about the move anywhere he goes, which is becoming a bit frustrating according to the player.
The Nets star said he's "sick of hearing why am I going to Turkey? Or when am I going, or when am I coming back?"
He added, "So hopefully when I go over there I won't hear those questions anymore, because it's every day."
With the NBA owners and players at loggerheads over a new CBA, the lockout was inevitable even when the season hadn’t ended. Williams decided to make his move early and agreed a contract with Turkish club Besiktas. The side had
hosted Allen Iverson last season and Williams is excited to play in a different culture as well as just to play at all.
"I'm excited," Williams said. "I think it'll be exciting to go over there and play basketball, for one, while everybody else isn't. It'll just be an exciting time for my family. See a new culture."
Deron agreed a contract with Besiktas for around $5 million. That is a significant amount of money for a European club to pay a player but it is still not much compared to what he would be able to make in the United States. However
playing competitive basketball is clearly important to the Nets point guard and the lockout means he has a better chance of doing that in Turkey.
In any case, there is a clause in his contract that will allow Williams to return to the NBA if the lockout ends in time for the season to take place.
