Deron Williams says his banged up wrist is the reason behind shooting slump – NBA News
The Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams revealed on Monday night that he has sprained his shooting hand wrist during a game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. Williams was talking to reporters after the Nets successfully defended home court against the travelling New York Knicks, defeating them 96-89 in overtime.
“When I went up against Blake Griffin (to try to dunk the ball), I landed on it. I came down and braced my fall with the right wrist, and I jammed it,” said Williams.
Williams scored 16 points and a season high 14 assists on Monday night against the Knicks, but only shot 6 of 17 from the field as he struggled to find his shooting rhythm. Infact, over the past seven games, Williams has only shot 33.3 percent from the field, which is an alarming sign for the player and the team.
“I still haven't shot the ball well. I'm just trying to get through these little nagging injuries, so hopefully I can shoot a little bit better and help my team a little bit more. I'm just trying to do the little things, get everybody involved, play solid defense and help my team win,” added Williams while talking about his shooting struggles.
The Nets Head Coach Avery Johnson talked about Williams and his injury issues prior to the Nets game on Sunday night against the Portland Trail Blazers, a game that the Nets won. He said that Williams has suffering from a banged up elbow and wrist, which was preventing him from shooting the ball well.
"I think he's banged up his elbow and his wrist. That's not a great recipe for success for a shooter,” said Johnson.
Williams is shooting 39.5 percent overall this season, with his three point shooting percentage at only 26.4 percent. He has been averaging 16.7 points and 8.9 assists so far, and has been a great floor manager for the Nets. However, he needs to improve his shooting game if the Nets want to have a deep run in the playoffs next May. The Nets are currently tied at the second place with the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference, with both teams having a win-loss record of 9-4.
