Deron Williams to meet Dallas Mavericks first to discuss his future – NBA Update
The most sought out player in this year`s free agency Deron Williams has moved one step closer to deciding his future as he would be meeting representatives from Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks on Monday.
Williams will first be meeting with the representatives from the Texas based team on Monday morning which will be followed by an evening meeting with the Brooklyn contingent to make a decision as soon as possible
regarding his future.
In a recent interview, Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki contemplated on the possibility of playing alongside a player of Williams’s calibre which may have served as a catalyst to the point guard’s decision in meeting
Dallas representatives first. According to recent reports the Dallas contingent will be lead by president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, head coach Rick Carlisle and a former Mavericks player Michael Finley, with both Nowitzki and Mark Cuban unable
to be part of the negotiations.
Free agent and veteran Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd has also been spending some time with Williams on the golf courses and would have been discussed the matter of his future as both these all-star point guards
have shown intentions to play on the same team.
Williams’ decision to meet with Dallas representatives first on Monday may be the only opportunity the franchise has to lure him and they will be offering a quick shot at something the one guard holds more valuable
to his basketball career – a championship.
Dallas won the NBA Championship in the 2010-11 season, but failed to impress in the last one, in the absence of some of their star players, who left as free agents. With Williams on their roster, the Texas based
team can once again become formidable contender and win a championship.
The Mavericks however are in no position to match the Nets offer from a financial stand point. They will reportedly offer Williams worth $75 million for the course of four years, an amount which can be easily
out matched by the Nets, who have hinted at a $100 million - five season contract.
Brooklyn have also been trying to rope in other pieces of the puzzle in the last few days. Dwight Howard, the Orlando Magic centre, has reportedly requested for a trade to the Nets, who have already signed Gerald
Wallace and are looking to add Atlanta Hawks’ Joe Johnson and Memphis Grizzlies’ O.J. Mayo.
If Williams joins them, he will become the franchise player, around whom the Nets can start a new era of glory.
Dallas or the Nets, the decision is now for Williams to make.
