Deron Williams to re-sign with the Brooklyn Nets – NBA Update
Super star point guard Deron Williams has finally made a decision regarding his future. The former Utah Jazz star will be staying with the Brooklyn Nets as the franchise enters a new era with their move out of New Jersey.
Williams had been in limbo over his future for months now and is an unrestricted free agent this summer. The Nets and Dallas Mavericks were the two teams vying for his signature and now it appears that the former has won the battle to keep him.
Both the Dallas Mavericks and Brooklyn Nets made their respective pitches to Deron on Monday and after much deliberation the point guard has decided to stay put. He cannot officially sign the extension for now but broke his silence via Twitter, remarking
that he had made a decision with the Brooklyn Nets logo attached.
The Nets reportedly offered Deron a contract worth $98 million for five years. The Dallas Mavericks could only offer him a contract worth four years and it is believed that was substantially less than what Brooklyn came up with.
The Mavs had cleared up cap space to entice Williams since last year. They had hoped the fact that Williams’ having grown up in Dallas would help tilt his decision in their favour. They could also offer Williams the chance of playing alongside super star
power forward Dirk Nowitzki, a former NBA Finals MVP.
In the end though the Mavs offer and their charms proved ineffective and the Nets came out on top. Brooklyn had bet pretty much their entire future on Williams staying put, offering him a max contract and making him the face of the franchise as they moved
into the new arena.
The Nets have also made some moves in the market that have been reported to spur Williams to stay with them. They have agreed for a deal with the Atlanta Hawks to bring in 6 times NBA All-Star shooting guard Joe Johnson. The prospect of pairing up with Johnson
in arguably the strongest back court in the NBA must have appealed to Deron.
Brooklyn have also reached an agreement with small forward Gerald Wallace over a four year deal and look set to become a force in the Eastern Conference next season.
