Two time gold winning point guard from the Brooklyn Nets wants to compete in 2016 Olympics as well, and is looking forward to next season.
Deron Williams, a two time Olympic gold medallist, has developed a liking for playing international tournaments, and said that he would definitely want to play for the U.S side in the upcoming 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball.
Williams, who won a gold medal with Team U.S.A at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and then successfully defended the title earlier this summer at the London Olympics, said that he loved representing the U.S in international tournaments
and would want to do it again.
Williams went beyond the 2014 championships and said that he could see himself playing in the next Olympics as well, which are scheduled to be played in Rio de Janeiro is 2016.
“I'll be 32, so I'm not going to be too old. (Jason) Kidd was 36 the last time we did it, so I could play two more essentially. But we'll see, we'll see what happens. Four years is a long ways off,” said Williams.
Officially known as the FIBA World Basketball Championships, the World Cup of Basketball is going to take place in 2014 in Spain. It is not as important a tournament as the Olympics in the U.S, but NBA and world basketball officials
are trying to make it big. Williams sat out of the 2010 tournament after initially planning to play. The U.S side, led by Kevin Durant, won that tournament.
"They're starting to try to put emphasis on it and make it more important. It's definitely important. I think the world championship is great. It's not the Olympics, but it is a big deal,” said Williams.
For now, Williams is focusing on the upcoming season, where he will play for the Brooklyn Nets in their first season since shifting from New Jersey to their brand new $1 billion arena in Brooklyn. The point guard was a free agent
over the summer, and decided to re-sign with the Nets for a five year deal worth $98 million, even though he had a four year offer from his hometown franchise, the Dallas Mavericks.
The Nets have not had much success as franchise these past few years, the future looks bright for this team which spent a lot of money in the off-season to acquire Joe Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks, and re-sign Brook Lopez and
Gerald Wallace.
"People sleep on us and we'll let them do that. That's fine. We have no excuses. I think everybody's at the point in their career where they want to win,” said Williams.
