Derrick Rose pleasantly surprised by the “Derrick Rose Rule” – NBA Update
Chicago Bulls super star Derrick Rose has welcomed a rule change named after him and said he was surprised when details about the rule came forward.
The “Derrick Rose Rule” has been included in the proposal for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, which is set to be ratified, and benefits players with great achievements during their Rookie contracts.
With the new rule, players who have been named to two All-Star games, or been included in two All-NBA teams while under a Rookie contract would be able to get 30 percent of a side’s salary cap space, up from 25 percent. The rule
would also apply to anyone winning the Most Valuable Player award, which Rose has done.
"It's unbelievable," Rose told CSNChicago.com. "But the rule, I guess, it fits me for what I've achieved at a young age and hopefully there will be a couple more people like me."
The rule was one of a number of concessions the NBA owners and Commissioner David Stern made after initially refusing to do so in order to get the NBA season back on track. Earlier, Stern and the owners had issued an ultimatum
to players to accept a much stricter proposal.
The National Basketball Players Association though rejected the ultimatum, disclaiming the union and suing the league instead. Facing damages over $6 billion in case of losing the legal battle, the NBA folded on some system issues
and the players gave back billions in Basketball Related Income in order to get a tentative deal done.
With the lockout almost over, players all over the league are looking ahead to a new NBA season. The 2011-2012 edition will only feature 66 games per team, but that is still more than enough for the fans who had been starved of
NBA action because of the labour dispute.
Players, such as Rose, are also delighted to be on their way back to an NBA court. They made many sacrifices during the lockout and now that their efforts have paid off, Rose is confident they will be able to make a smooth transition
back.
"I think it should be fine knowing that since the lockout the people in the league have really good mentors telling them to keep working out, people that's behind them, people with their team that's always keeping them in shape,"
Rose said. "I think that people should knock off the rust within a couple of games and then we'll be back at it."
Most players kept themselves in shape by appearing in various pickup or charity games, although Rose concentrated on personal training, taking part in just one exhibition tour early in the lockout.
