Derrick Rose takes another step towards making a comeback – NBA Update
Derrick Rose is getting close to making a comeback for the Chicago Bulls. The sensational point guard who became the youngest player ever to win an MVP title in 2010-11 season, and has been one of the main reasons behind the Bulls’
resurgence in the last four years, had torn his ACL on April 28 last year, late in the game-1 of the first round series against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Rose’s recovery was expected to take 6-8 months and more than one third of the way into the season, the one-guard is close to returning. Rose has been participating in non contact drill for the last few weeks and on Wednesday;
he participated in the pre-game shoot out, travelling with his team for the first time since his injury.
"It's good," said coach Tom Thibodeau before the game against the Orlando Magic. "He's been around the whole time. You guys don't see him as much as everyone else does, the team does, I should say. So I don't think it's that big
of a deal. It's the next step in the progression for him. He's getting up to speed with everything offensively, defensively, his teammates.
Despite the positive development, the head coach preached caution and termed it as just one of the steps in the list of many before the guard could make a comeback.
"It's just the next step, and he's got to continue the things that he's been doing and the team has to continue to focus on our improvement and our opponent and then at some point he'll be ready to go. But he still has some time
to go.”
The Bulls have done pretty well so far in the season. After Wednesday’s 96-94 win against the Magic, they are 17-13 and at a respectable 4th position in the Eastern Conference. Their success has come courtesy of a defence
first philosophy of their coach and some excellent exhibitions from Luol Deng and Joakim Noah, two players who have seen major minutes in the absence of the premier point guard and a sound offensive option.
They are however still lacking the killer instinct and their last loss against the lowly Charlotte Bobcats perhaps came as a rude awakening. Rose is still one or two months away from return, but the prospect of him making a comeback
into the business end of the season is certainly a major motivation for the team to keep on rolling.
