Derrick Rose’s high school coach convinced the Chicago Bulls star will bounce back – NBA Update
Derrick Rose’s suffered a season ending knee injury in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers. The devastating injury might have dampened his spirits earlier, but his high school coach Robert Smith believes the
player will bounce back strong.
Rose underwent knee surgery recently to repair the torn ACL that ended his campaign and the doctors have said he will require 8 – 12 months in order to completely come back to fitness. Rose is to undergo a rigorous rehab programme and Smith, who met the
player after his surgery, said that the former NBA Most Valuable Player was in the right frame of mind for the challenge.
"He's doing well," Simeon Career Academy (Chicago) coach Robert Smith said. "He was at rehab. His spirits are up. He's ready to work as hard as he can to get back on the court. That's his objective right now.”
In Derrick’s absence, his Eastern Conference topping Chicago Bulls lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round, bringing to a disappointing end for the team what had been such a promising season. Even more worrying for Bulls fans is the fact that with
such a serious injury, and such a lengthy rehab time, Derrick might not be the same ever.
Doctors have claimed that they expect Rose to make a full recovery and the only thing that might hinder him from being his explosive self on the court is a mental block. Smith though ruled out the possibility, saying that Rose is too strong mentally and
will not let the injury affect him in the long run.
"There's no doubt in my mind he's going to come back. I think he's going to come back and going to back at full strength. At the beginning, he might think about it a little more. When he gets to be more comfortable, he's going to be the Derrick Rose of old."
Rose’s former coach recalled the players younger days and explained that he did suffer injuries back then, but that never hampered his play.
"He just came back stronger," Smith said. "Whatever it takes to get healthy, he'll do it."
