Derry Mathews: Nose recovery is the first and foremost priority – Boxing news
Derry Mathews has decided to visit an Otolaryngology specialist in order to know the currents status of his two-time broken nose.
Derry has revealed that his future boxing plans will be based upon his consultant’s recommendations regarding his broken nose.
Derry, 28, Britain’s number seven lightweight boxer has won various titles throughout his career since 2003. Widely renowned and nicknamed as Dirty, Mathews has thrown himself in a total of 34 bouts, winning 29 of them. He has lost 5 brawls to date.
Mathews has been facing problems regarding his nose after a heavy head butt from Gavin Rees. The bout was held on October 1, 2011 and was for the EBU European lightweight title. Nobody knew that it will end in such a mess in just the fourth round, with Rees
retaining the title and Derry with a broken nose.
Later on, after the necessary medical treatment, Derry thought that he can take on another bout. His next bout was set up with the Italian boxing maestro Emiliano Marsili, in which he again suffered severe nose injuries.
Derry did not want to lose this slot to grasp the vacant IBO lightweight title, since it could have boosted up his career as the man who has won the world championship title in two different weight divisions. Mathews was confident but he did not realise
that the Italian 35-year-old is a powerhouse and his speciality is knocking out his opponents ruthlessly.
The bout started and as expected Emiliano, aimed and accurately placed his punches on Derry’s already injured and broke nose. As a result, the 28-year-old got knocked out in the seventh round with blood flowing through his nose. Derry lost not only the title
but also his well being and now his career might come to an end since his nose has already received serious blows not once but twice.
Derry said that he did not even inform his sparring partners before Emiliano bout that his nose is broken. The only individuals who knew about this injury were his wife and his trainer.
Derry while commenting, said, “Only me, Oliver (Harrison, trainer) and my missus knew about it. I didn’t even tell my sparring partners, or people like Joe Tonks – the people close to me. I’ll have a good think and a rest now and just see what happens.”
While putting forth his future ambitions Derry overwhelmingly said that, “If there is a title fight with someone like Anthony Crolla then I would take that or even just a good fight.”
Derry reiterated that his first and foremost thing to do is to consult a specialist and ask for his advice. Mathews said that if the doctor said I need a rest for 15 months then that would be an unacceptable option. Derry currently is the world number 78
lightweight pugilist.
