Does anyone remember what roads stayed open during the flood? I'm not quite old enough to remember i was still pretty young, but my parents are arguing about what roads where open. One is saying pretty much all of the roads to get out of Des Moines were closed and the other disagrees. Someone please help me i cant find it on the internet!!

  1. Most of the same roads that are or will be flooded now (week of June 8, 2008) were the same roads that flooded in 1993.  At one point in time, the Raccoon River was over Interstate 80 west of Des Moines by Van Meter.  It was possible to get out of, and even around within, Des Moines, you just may have had a detour or two (also known as "taking the scenic route"), depending on where you were going.  If you are interested, there are photos from that event at the Des Moines Register website "dmregister.com".
