Descalso and Carpenter spark as St. Louis Cardinals overpower Chicago Cubs, 6-4: MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ infielder Daniel Descalso and starter Chris Carpenter both had a remarkable day as Descalso hit two RBIs single and Carpenter threw seven dominant pitches in their Club’s 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago
on May 10.
Carpenter allowed just four runs on 13 hits including four earned runs. He gave away two walks with four strike-outs.
Both the teams started their runs in the first inning. The Cardinals’ shortstop, Ryan Theriot, hit an RBI single and Colby Rasmus completed one run by reaching at the first base. Rasmus went 1-for-5 with the bat. The Cubs got a 2-1 lead in the first inning
when Kosuke Fukudome and Darwin Barney added two runs for their home. The second and third inning went scoreless for both sides.
During fourth inning, the Cardinals went ahead with 3-2 when Lance Berkman scored one run for a double-play on the sacrifice bunt of Descalso. For the Cardinals, the batters performed pretty well for this convincing win.
Descalso said of his game tactics, “That was a big hit for a lot of people in this room. It was obviously nice to get Carpenter his first win, and there's a lot going on today.”
Albert Pujols was the other key player who posted a single run in the fourth inning and went 4-for-5 with the bat. The scorecard was unmoved till the sixth inning. The seventh inning was similar with the first one as the Cardinals added single and the Cubs
posted two runs.
Nick Punto scored one run in the seventh inning on the throwing error of Fukudome, who threw the ball hard towards the third base where Koyie Hill could not handle the ball cleanly. The Cubs tied the game with 4-all in the seventh inning when Carlos Pena
hit a sacrifice fly and Starlin Castro made a single. Marlon Byrd went 2-for-5 and contributed one run for his team.
The Cardinals were on top in the eighth inning when Yadier Molina singled on the fly ball of Holliday and Descalso hit his second RBI of the game to give his team a 6-4 lead. It remained still when no score was added in the ninth inning.
The Cardinals’ Manager, Tony La Russa, missed the last two games due to eyesight problem and the team played his past games under the instructions of their General Manager, John Mozeliak, who told the situation of La Russa.
Mozeliak said, “Nothing has changed in terms of his condition -- being worse than what we were led on to believe or anything of that nature. That part's good news. Now he just has to allow the medication to work.”
The Cardinals’ relievers also played a crucial part as they pitched two score-less innings collectively.
