  1. Do you mean 'needs' in terms of how to choose the toys?

-are they safe; non-toxic, no sharp edges etc

-suitable for that age? No good giving them something to young else they'll get bored, and nothing too hard else it will put them off and danage self-esteem.

-open-ended-lets them choose how to use it, encourages them to think 'what can this be?'

-can they reach? IS it at a height children can safely reach eg: no goodhaving high cupboards cos they can hit self in head with door, not reach toys in back etc.

-a choice-make sure they have a small range so they arent either fighting for same toy, or only have small amount and get bored easily!

-don't choose the theme for them -this kinda goes with the open-ended thing eg: have out play food but dont assume its a house...maybe its a party, or going for picnic, or a shop...make sure you're prepared for the direction they take it in!

-Toys that are non-stereotypcial eg: not all kitchen toys should be pink and not all police are boys!

-Make sure posters reflect the above too!

-If having a medical theme dont just have nurses dresses-men can be nurses and girls can be doctors so have toys that can beused by either gender!

  2. -open-ended, can be played with in a variety of different ways.

-are simple, yet attractive in their details, allowing the child’s imagination to complete the details to suit their mood or play.

-let the child determine the play (they are not modeled after the latest cartoon or movie).

    -are made of natural materials.
