  1. NH4+ reacts with alkaline hypochlorite in the presence of nitroprusside, and is complexed with alkaline phenol. Precipitation of magnesium and calcium is prevented by complexing with a strong citrate buffer. The reaction mixture is heated to 80 C to accelerate the reaction, and absorbance is measured at 660 nm.
