The term "Bipolar Disorder" includes a lot of things.  But basically it is a situation where people experience noticable changes in mood that are not caused by something external.  For no apparent reason you swing between high moods and low moods.

Bipolar disorder is characterized by two things, Depression and Manic stages. These moods cycle uncontrollably sometimes alot, and somtimes not for a very long time.

depressive states are severe and cause many who dont get help to commit suicide. but the manic phases are so great, that someoen who just tried killing themselves could be running and screaming with joy about nothing at all.

treatments may include involuntary hospitalization if they represent a harm to themselves or others, and they are usually put on lithium or other types of that med, an anti depressant, and sometimes an anti psychotic. its alife long illness that can be treated
